FAQs About Bunions

Bunions can cause extensive pain and discomfort. In severe cases, bunions can even make it difficult to walk. Without treatment, bunions could become worse and lead to additional problems. The experienced Chiropodists at Bloor West Foot Clinic in Toronto, ON, treat bunions so you can get back on your feet.

What are Bunions?

A bunion is a bony bump or protrusion on the side of the foot near the base of the big toe. The bump forms when the big toe slants toward the other toes, causing the metatarsophalangeal toe joint at the base of the big toe to slant in the opposite direction. The bony end of the joint ends up pressing against the side of the foot, resulting in a bony protrusion, otherwise known as a bunion.

What Causes Bunions?

Many factors can contribute to the formation of bunions, including:

  • A dislocated metatarsophalangeal toe joint
  • Shoes that are too tight or narrow
  • Standing for extended periods
  • An injury to the toes or feet
  • Certain types of arthritis
  • Foot anatomy issues
  • Genetics

What Can Happen if Bunions aren’t Treated?

Bunions do not go away without treatment. The constant friction produced when the interior of the shoes rubs against the bunions often leads to persistent inflammation, pain, and discomfort. Some of the long-term effects of leaving bunions untreated include:

  • Difficulty walking
  • Chronic discomfort and pain
  • Development of hammertoe or another foot condition
  • Development of thicker skin on the bottom of the feet
  • Repeated friction can rub the skin raw and cause infection
  • Development of bursitis or arthritis or bursitis

How are Bunions Treated?

Several effective methods exist for treating bunions. The skilled foot doctors at our clinic in Toronto, ON, will develop a bunions treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. Treatment options include:

  • Surgery to remove bunions or realign the toe joint

  • Custom orthotics to stabilize the toe joint and correct foot position
  • Foot exercises to improve joint mobility and function and to prevent stiffness
  • Night splints to realign a dislocated toe joint while sleeping
  • Wearing roomier shoes that will not aggravate bunions
