Understanding Pes Cavus (High-Arched Feet)
What Is Pes Cavus?
Pes cavus is a condition where the arch of the foot is higher than normal. Unlike flat feet, high-arched feet place more weight on the heel and ball of the foot, which can lead to discomfort, instability, and foot problems over time.
This condition can affect one or both feet and can occur at any age.
Common Symptoms:
- Foot pain, especially in the heel or ball of the foot
- Calluses under the ball or heel
- Toe deformities such as claw toes or hammertoes
- Ankle instability or frequent ankle sprains
- Fatigue or discomfort when standing or walking for long periods
- Tight Achilles tendon or plantar fascia
What Causes Pes Cavus?
High arches can be caused by:
- Neurological conditions (e.g., Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, spina bifida)
- Muscle imbalances or inherited foot structure
- Previous injury or trauma
- Idiopathic (no known cause)
A full biomechanical and neurological exam can help determine the cause.
Treatment Options:
Conservative Care:
- Treatment Options
Treatment is tailored to each patient’s condition and lifestyle needs:
- Footwear Modification
Proper shoes with adequate support and heel cushioning are essential.
- Custom Orthotics
We may prescribe custom orthotics to offload pressure and correct biomechanical imbalances.
- Padding & Offloading Techniques
To relieve pressure on claw or hammertoes
- Manual Therapy & Mobilization
Chiropodists trained in Functional Manual Therapy (FMT) can mobilize soft tissues to reduce tension around the inflamed area.
- Activity Modification & Stretching
We provide guidance on safe activity levels and recommend stretching routines, especially for tight calf muscles or plantar fascia.
- Foot care
To manage corns, calluses, or skin breakdown
When to See a Chiropodist:
See your foot specialist if you experience:
- Frequent foot or ankle pain
- Balance issues or repeated ankle injuries
- Signs of nerve problems (tingling, weakness, or numbness)
- Difficulty finding comfortable footwear
